Wow! Is it already August 23, 2009?

When it’s time to put away the tank-tops, swimsuits, and beach towels it must mean that fall is just around the corner! Yahoo! That means it’s time to get out your favorite team colors, your old college sweatshirts, that faded long-sleeved tee, and soak up the sun on a crisp fall day with the leaves falling off the trees! Oh, just thinking about that makes me super excited for this upcoming season.

I’m also excited to announce that we are officially gearing back up in Sunday School too! This summer we branched off a little and took a little hiatus from class, but we are back and ready to rock and roll! With careful discernment and help from Pastor Katie, we have chosen a new series called “The Parables of Jesus” to kick off our new year! This will be a wonderful series that should fit into our class very well. This is a six week video series that is written and taught by biblical experts-six professors with specialized areas of knowledge. Here’s a little statement about the series “Jesus communicated deep spiritual truths through simple, vivid, and engaging stories. Woven from stuff of everyday life, His parables made the kingdom of God understandable and accessible to his listeners.” Won’t you come and join with us on this adventure? This new series starts August 30th.

If you have taken a break from Sunday School, we’d love to have you back!
If you’ve stepped away because the series wasn’t what you were looking for, we’d love to have you back!
If you’ve not yet come to our group, we’d love to have you!

Our group is truly a mix of young adults: young married couples, young singles, working professional adults, some with children and some with no children. We are absolutely all in this for the same purpose, to glorify God and to make disciples by sharing God’s love one person at a time. Won’t you come join us on Sunday?

Let’s start this Fall Season off right, with new friends and new lessons to apply to our life! We’d love to see you here!

Currently, the room is in the Adult Sunday School Wing on the 2nd Floor (1st Room on the Left). There is a possibility that the room could switch. If there is a change, we will have signs on the door and will look to let everyone know of the new location.

I pray that you each have a wonderful week, and that you may touch the hem of his garment, and feel the love of Christ in those times of joy as well as times of struggle.

Navigating Route 20-Something

Life as a twentysomething can be exhilarating, scary, confusing, rich, and exhausting. And it can be all of those in one day! Amid the turmoil, a little guidance goes a long way – especially from someone recently making the same journey.

Erin Keeley Marshall learned much through her twenties, and she offers this map for the road ahead of her fellow travelers. Using examples from her own life and the Bible, she spotlights 20 different principles she wishes she’d learned earlier. Whether in college, single, married, or learning the joys of parenting, Erin offers advice for twentysomethings in all stages of life.

While this wide range makes this book more accessible, it also betrays its chief weakness – lack of focus. Many of the chapters could be studied as is by any youth group. Others would easily fit Christian adults in their 30s, 40s, and beyond. Less than a quarter of the book seems aimed at the book’s audience, and that audience is already fragmented by radically different life situations.

Each chapter begins with a glimpse into Erin’s life or an interesting observation. Then she expands the thought with ideas and insights that lead into a Bible illustration. The chapters end with “Consider This…” – five paragraphs of questions to get you thinking deeper.

Some of the examples are typical to the point of triteness – courage and Joshua, resting and keeping the Sabbath – but nuggets of wisdom shine through in many of the chapters. However, one thing this book really lacks is practical tips. Erin presents dilemmas, gives Biblical examples, and provides an end goal, but doesn’t give steps to move toward that goal (besides the Living Abundantly lists at the end of the book). A way to compensate for this would be to use the book for group studies. The concluding questions can springboard discussion and members of the group can suggest practical ways to implement the lessons.

So if you’re looking for a book to get for yourself or a twentysomething in your life, I’d recommend you try Life. Now. by Michael and Shannon Primicerio or Perspectives by Colin Creel, but if you’re looking for a book for your young adult small group, Navigating Route 20-Something may be just what you need.

Young Married Small Group

Come and join our music minister, Timothy Putnam and his wife Kristin, in a study of "The Five Love Languages." This is held at the church in the choir room. It's on Thursday nights at 6:30. Childcare is available at the church for this small group event! Devotional Thinking..

Attacking Anxiety

Have you ever been stressed? Ever been a little anxious? Me, too. The
things that weigh us down can be as small as trying to make something fit into our schedules, to as big as the health of a loved one. And in almost every instance, they are things over which we have no control. No matter what it is that weighs us down, God has a better way to handle our stress. “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” (NAS Philippians 4:6)

Stop. Go back and read the last sentence again.

Did you catch it? Did you notice the subject of that sentence? Think back
to elementary grammar class. It is the “Understood You!” “[YOU] Be anxious for nothing…” It caught me by surprise several years ago when I realized that this is a command. It is an imperative. Thankfully we serve a kind and good God who never commands us to do anything that we are incapable of doing. God shows us the way to live worry free in the second half of this verse. “…by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.”

The key to overcoming anxiety is found in those two simple words “with
thanksgiving.” Too often we worry with our prayers. What should be a time of giving our fears over to God, becomes just another vehicle for expressing our worry! Even as we approach the Prince of Peace we are so overcome by anxiety that we end up pleading with God to meet our needs rather than trusting Him to provide for us. But we can be thankful that God holds the future in His hands.

We can be thankful that God has promised to meet our needs. In fact,
just a few verses later, Paul tells the Philippians, “And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” (NAS Philippians 4:19) God knows what the provision for our
need is before we even ask!
This week’s homework: Don’t worry! Be thankful! Make your requests known to God through thankful prayer.

We invite all Young Adults
to be a part of our newest Sunday School
class at Faith.

NOISE: Why is silence so hard to deal with? Why
is it so much easier for us to live our lives with a lot of things going on all
the time than to just be in silence? We’re constantly surrounded with
“voices” that are influencing us on how to think, feel, and behave.
There’s always something going on. But maybe there’s a connection
between the amount of noise in our lives and our inability to hear God. If
God sometimes feels distant to us, maybe it’s not because he’s not
talking to us, but simply because we aren’t really listening.
Do you listen to God?

SUNDAY: Why do we do the things we do? Why do
we go to church or give money away? Because we’re supposed to or
because we think God needs it? God hates it when we call ourselves
Christians but ignore all the things he really cares about. He hates it
when we go through hollow routines out of some feeling of duty or obligation.
God doesn’t want the meaningless rituals. God wants our hearts.
Does God have your heart?

KICKBALL: We always think we know what’s
missing from our lives in order to really make us happy, don’t we? If only
I had that car, or that job, or if only I could lose those 15 lbs, then I’d be
happy. Really? How often do we want something only to find out that it
wasn’t that great after all. Do we trust that God is good and sees a bigger
picture than we ever could? It’s easy to want what’s right in front of
us, but maybe God knows what’s better for us, and sometimes we just
can’t see it.
Do you really trust God?

LUGGAGE: Maybe a friend turned their back on
you. Maybe someone you loved betrayed you. We all have wounds and
we end up carrying around these things that people have done to us for
weeks, months, and sometimes even years. So the only way to feel
better seems to be somehow getting back at the people that hurt us, to
get revenge. But does revenge ever truly satisfy? Maybe forgiving isn’t
something you do for someone else to let them off the hook. Maybe
forgiveness is about you. God didn’t create you to carry these wounds
around, God created you to be free.
Are you free?
